Our God is High and Lofty

Maybe you’re struggling with worry, anxiety, fear, or doubt today. Maybe you’re worried about the COVID-19 virus that’s been spreading into different areas. Whatever it is, rest in the truth that you are not outside of God’s control. Nothing is outside of His will. He knows what’s best for us, even if it doesn’t seem like it in the moment. Only He can see our future. Our God is High and Lofty.

In this post, I want to encourage you with the hope that we have in God. The rest of this post is a sample taken from a short devotional I wrote. You can download a FREE PDF version of 8 Days of Hope by clicking here. True and lasting hope can only be found in God.

Sample from 8 Days of Hope

“For this is what the high and lofty One says—he who lives forever, whose name is holy.” Isaiah 57:15

Growing up, I remember trying to stay in control of my life. I believed in God, but I called on Him only when I thought I needed Him. I knew God was there, but I still wanted to be in control. I thought I knew best when it came to making decisions for my life. Honestly, I continue to struggle with this today. I daily need to be reminded that I’m not God. And I’m not in control. God is God because He is in complete control of all things in the spiritual and physical worlds. He is the Creator and I am the created. I can trust that my Creator, the High and Lofty One, knows what’s best for me and all of His creation.

Our first day of hope is on the High and Lofty God. We have hope in God because He alone is High and Lofty. There is none like Him. He stands uncontested. He is the Almighty God. He is Sovereign. He is all-powerful, all-knowing, all-seeing, and all-wise. He is holy, righteous, pure, just, mighty, faithful, merciful, loving, kind, compassionate, good, eternal, and much more.

In the first part of Isaiah 57:15, we are told who God is: “For this is what the high and lofty One says—he who lives forever, whose name is holy.” If God were not high, lofty, eternal, or holy, we would not have much hope in Him. If He were not any of these things, then He would be like us—weak, mortal, and flawed. God would not be God without being high and lofty. Lofty is defined as exalted or lifted up. Only God is worthy to be described by these characteristics.

Because God is high and lofty, eternal, and holy, we can lean on Him with confidence and trust. We are told in Isaiah 55:8-9 that God’s ways and thoughts are not like ours. His ways and thoughts are above ours. We can’t understand them completely because they aren’t our natural ways or thoughts. This is why we can and should place our hope in God. His ways and thoughts are not bent by selfish and sinful desires like mankind’s. He is set apart. He is the Creator, not the created. That alone gives Him the only right to take the title High and Lofty.

Into the Word

High and Lofty:

“’Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all. Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name.’” 1 Chronicles 29:11-13

“For you, O Lord, are the Most High over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods.” Psalm 97:9

Lives Forever:

“’Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.’” Isaiah 40:28

Holy:

“’There is no one holy like the Lord; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.’” 1 Samuel 2:2

  1. Thank you!! God is so much bigger than what the media is trying to do to our society. I sincerely feel for the people who have lost loved ones, but how lucky to be moving on and into the arms of Jesus!
